After 500 metre hike uphill we arrived at open grassland and it was like hitting jackpot. Because we can witness the colourful butterflies flattering all around the place . The recent butterfly walk that undertook along with five other members in the Devadhanapatti range of Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary. In just a half day we recorded nearly 85 species including some rare varieties of butterflies. We are happily suprised at the concentration number and diversity of butterflies in the small pocket. The forest of theni are known for the famous Kumbakarai falls and had a wide range of trees of plants. With the discovery of these butterfly population in the pocket which could attract wide arrange of people towards the place. One of the main reasons for a thriving butterfly population is very less human intrusion and thus no deforestation. That has ensured and undisturbed habitat for the winged wonders. During season we heard that the entire stretch is full of blossoms. Patches open for grassland top the hills are home to over 15species including the Browns varieties of butterflies that are very much dependent on grass beds.we have very good volunteers in 23 districts and the first list had 271 species. Now we have covered the plains delta and both Eastern and western ghats for more number of species.
